Intraoral Cameras and Scanners

Intraoral cameras are digital imaging tools used by dentists to capture detailed images of the teeth and mouth. These cameras are small enough to fit comfortably inside the mouth, mounted on the tip of an intraoral wand that can be moved around the teeth.

How Intraoral Scanners Work

Intraoral cameras take high-resolution images of the teeth and mouth. Once captured, imaging software—such as computer-aided design or computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) applications—can piece together hundreds of images to create a detailed 3D digital model of the intraoral cavity.

Dentists can use these cameras, sometimes referred to as scanners, for various purposes and types of images. For instance, a single tooth requiring a restorative procedure can be enlarged and examined individually. The camera can also capture images of a full arch or both arches of teeth. Additionally, dentists or periodontists may use intraoral cameras to document soft tissues of the mouth, including the gums and soft palate.
